Hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres in Nepal, listed with the details that decide whether a journey is worth making: address, telephone, opening hours, the languages spoken at reception, and what to bring.

Every entry is checked before it publishes and carries the date it was verified. Where something is unconfirmed, the listing says so rather than guessing - being sent to a facility that closed at two is worse than having no listing at all.

What to check before you choose one

  • Emergency department, or clinic hours only. Not every hospital admits around the clock.
  • The department you actually need. Specialist provision is concentrated in a small number of facilities, mostly in the Kathmandu valley.
  • Payment at the time, which is the norm. Ask what is accepted before you arrive.
  • Insurance. Few Nepali providers bill an insurer directly, so expect to pay and claim back.
  • Language at reception, which the listing records where we have confirmed it.

For how the system is organised between public, private and charitable providers, healthcare and hospital covers it. Foreign residents should also read healthcare, which covers the blood replacement arrangement and what differs for a non-citizen.

In an emergency, do not use a directory. Call 102 for an ambulance or go directly to the nearest hospital with an emergency department. Emergency covers the sequence and the numbers.

Get a facility listed

If you run a hospital, clinic or diagnostic centre, partner registration is where to submit it. We confirm the details before publishing, and a listing that is verified is worth more to you than one that is merely present.

If something here is out of date - an hour, a number, a department that moved - tell us.

Diagnostics, pharmacy and the paperwork

Two points that come up after the appointment rather than before it.

Diagnostics are often separate. Imaging and laboratory work may be done at a different facility from your consultation, so ask where you are being sent and whether the result comes back to the same doctor.

Keep the itemised bill, not only the receipt. Any insurance claim, and any reimbursement from a policy held abroad, needs the line-by-line statement and a diagnosis document. Ask for both on the day, because obtaining them weeks later is harder. Insurance covers what a claim requires.
