Hotels, guesthouses and serviced apartments, with locations, price ranges and the facilities that actually matter - including for stays measured in weeks rather than nights.
What to check, especially for a longer stay
- Hot water and heating, which many buildings lack. A Nepali winter in an unheated room is colder than the temperature suggests.
- The water supply and whether there is a backup tank.
- Power backup, and what it actually runs.
- Internet, tested rather than advertised, if you intend to work.
- Monthly rates, which are often substantially negotiable and rarely advertised.
- Location against your actual purpose. Tourist districts are convenient and priced accordingly.
A guesthouse or serviced apartment for the first few weeks is the sensible way to arrive, because it buys you time to find housing properly rather than signing a lease in week one. Housing covers the deposit convention and the ownership restriction, and living and housing covers what rent includes.
Booking, and the seasons
Rates move sharply with the season. Autumn and spring are peak in the trekking and tourist areas and prices follow; the monsoon is cheap and quiet nearly everywhere.
Booking direct by telephone frequently beats the platforms on price, particularly for a stay of a week or more, and it is the only way to negotiate a monthly rate. Around the autumn festival weeks, book well ahead regardless.

For the first weeks after you arrive
The use case this category serves best. Arriving into a guesthouse or serviced apartment for two to four weeks is the sensible way to start, because it buys time to look at neighbourhoods properly, test commutes at the real hour, and avoid signing a lease in week one.
Ask for a monthly rate, which is often well below the nightly rate and rarely advertised. And choose somewhere in or near the area you think you want to live, so the weeks double as research. Living and housing covers what to look for next.
