Restaurants and cafes by cuisine and city, including the categories that are genuinely hard to search for: Newa cooking, Korean, halal and reliable vegetarian.

What the listings record

Cuisine, city and area, price range, and where we have confirmed it: whether there is a vegetarian menu rather than a single dish, whether halal provision is certified or described, and the languages spoken.

Two notes worth having before you go. Vegetarian in Nepal usually includes dairy and is widely available, so the harder request is vegan - say no dairy explicitly. And halal provision is concentrated rather than widespread, so ask about the broth and the cooking oil rather than only the meat.

Restaurants and food covers what Nepali food actually is and what it costs. Foreign residents with a dietary restriction should read food and restaurants, which covers allergies and the language around them.

Water, and paying

Two practical things. Do not drink tap water, and in established places the filtered water on the table and the ice are fine, while at a roadside stall you should assume otherwise. Food and restaurants covers food safety properly.

And payment is increasingly digital in cities and still cash in markets, small restaurants and outside the main towns. There is no tipping convention, though rounding up is common and appreciated.

Get listed

Restaurants and cafes can submit details through partner registration. Dietary provision is the field most worth getting right, because it is the one people search on and the one most often wrong elsewhere.

Finding good food, practically

The directory helps with categories; the rest is local knowledge, and two signals are reliable.

A busy place with turnover is both better and safer than a quiet one reheating, which matters for hygiene as much as for taste. And a queue of Nepali customers at an unremarkable shopfront is the strongest indicator available, exactly as it is in Korea.

What to discount: an elaborate interior, a menu in four languages, and proximity to a tourist district, all of which correlate with price rather than quality.
