Travel agencies, trekking operators, airlines and transport companies, listed with registration details - which, in this category, is the point of the listing.

What to check before you book a trek

  • Registration. The operator should be registered and able to show it. Permits for restricted areas can only be arranged through a registered agency.
  • Whether a guide is required for your route. The rules have changed in recent years and vary by region, so confirm the current position rather than relying on an older account.
  • What the price includes - permits, park entry, accommodation, food, guide and porter wages, and insurance for the staff as well as for you.
  • Your own insurance, specifically the altitude limit as a number and whether helicopter evacuation is covered. Insurance covers the exclusions that actually catch people.
  • Acclimatisation days in the itinerary. An itinerary with none is a warning about the operator.

Foreign nationals pay more than Nepali citizens for conservation area permits, park entry and some flights. That is published policy, not an attempt on you. Travel covers the permit system and the tiers, and tourism and travel covers the regions.

Registered agencies, operators and transport companies can submit details through partner registration. We verify registration before publishing, which is worth more in this category than in any other.

Insurance, including for the staff

Two questions worth asking an operator that most clients never do.

Are the guides and porters insured, and to what level? Reputable operators insure their staff, and the ones that do not are cutting a cost somewhere you cannot see.

What is the weight limit for porters, and is it respected? Agreed limits exist, and an operator who ignores them is one to avoid on grounds beyond ethics, because an injured porter is a trek that stops.

Insurance covers your own cover, which is a separate question and the one that catches people at altitude.
