Korean immigration runs on two things: an online appointment system, and a free multilingual helpline on 1345. Use both and the process is efficient. Ignore them and you will spend a day in a queue to be told you needed a document.
This page covers dealing with the institution. Which status you hold is on visa, extending it is on visa extension, and the card is on residence and ARC.
The appointment system
Offices are spread across the country, with regional offices and smaller branch offices covering most cities. The one that serves you is determined by where you live, and that is where your case is handled.
Book through the government portal before going. Walk-in capacity is limited or absent depending on the office and the service, and busy periods around semester changes fill weeks ahead. Many applications can be filed entirely online, which is better than any appointment.
Bring more than the checklist says. Offices apply the same rules with some local variation, and an extra document you do not need costs nothing while a missing one costs a second visit.
What an office actually handles
Knowing which service you need stops you booking the wrong appointment:
| Service | Note |
|---|---|
| First registration and the residence card | Within 90 days of arrival |
| Extending your permission to stay | Often fully online |
| Changing your status of stay | Usually requires attending in person |
| Permission for a student to work part-time | Granted here, not by your employer |
| Reporting a change of workplace or school | Where your status requires it |
| Re-entry matters before a long absence | File before you leave, not after |
| Permanent residence and naturalisation | Separate, longer processes |
| Reissuing a lost or damaged card | Bring a photograph and the fee |
Address changes are the exception: those are filed at your local district office, which is convenient because it is where you also file the move-in report that protects your housing deposit. Residence and ARC covers the reporting duties.
The helpline, which is genuinely good
The immigration contact centre on 1345 operates in a long list of languages at no cost, and the people answering it know the rules.
Use it before you assume anything from a forum post, a colleague or an article. Rules change, categories have exceptions, and a five-minute call gives you an authoritative answer about your specific case. For anything unusual, call before you book an appointment, because it may not be the service you need.
Leaving and coming back
For most registered foreign residents, ordinary trips abroad need nothing in advance: you leave and return on your existing status and card.
The threshold to know is a long absence. Stay out of Korea beyond the permitted period and your registration can lapse, which means your right to return on that status goes with it. If you are planning an extended trip home, a sabbatical or a long work posting elsewhere, check what you need to file before you depart, because fixing it from outside Korea is much harder.
This matters particularly for permanent residents, where a long absence can affect the status itself. Long-term residence covers that.
Overstaying
| Length | Broadly what follows |
|---|---|
| Days | A fine, and a record that is visible at every later application |
| Months | A larger fine, likely an entry ban, and departure requirements |
| Longer | Escalating penalties, a longer ban, and removal proceedings |
The record is the part people underestimate. A short overstay cleared years ago still appears when you apply for permanent residence or naturalisation, and it is weighed.
Voluntary reporting produces a far better outcome than being found. Korea has at various times run arrangements that reduce or waive penalties and shorten or remove entry bans for people who come forward and leave of their own accord. The terms change, so call 1345 and ask what currently applies rather than relying on what someone told you last year.
If you are already undocumented, two things remain true and are worth knowing. Industrial accident compensation covers an injured worker regardless of status, and wage claims can still be pursued. Worker rights covers both.
Enforcement, detention and removal
Immigration conducts workplace inspections and identity checks. If you are detained, you are entitled to contact your embassy and to seek legal representation, and you should do both.
Consular staff cannot secure your release or pay your fines, but they can confirm your welfare, notify your family and provide a list of lawyers. Do not sign a Korean-language document you have not had translated independently, however routine it is presented as being. Legal consultation covers free advice services, several of which operate in languages other than Korean.
Where this goes wrong
- Arriving without an appointment. Usually a wasted day.
- Trusting a forum over 1345. The helpline is free and authoritative.
- A long absence abroad with nothing filed before departure.
- Treating a few days of overstay as trivial. It stays on the record.
- Waiting to be found rather than reporting voluntarily.
- Signing something you cannot read while detained.
Where to go next
Visa extension is what prevents most of the trouble on this page, and legal consultation covers help when it has already happened.
Before any appointment
A short list that prevents most wasted visits.
Book online, and check which office serves your address rather than the nearest one. Read the document list for your exact category, not the general one. Bring more than the list asks for, including copies and spare photographs. Check your health insurance and tax position beforehand, since both are visible to the office and both can stop an otherwise routine application. Call 1345 first for anything unusual, because it is free, multilingual, and will tell you whether the appointment you are about to book is even the right service.
Arrive early. Offices fill, and a queue number issued late in the day may not be reached.
